Pittsburgh Steelers trade Starting NFC South Quarterback In Bold Free Agency Move

The Pittsburgh Steelers secured a spot in the postseason with a record of 10 wins and seven losses in the regular season. Despite their impressive journey, they faced a decisive defeat against the Buffalo Bills in the first round, marking the end of their unexpected playoff run. Following injuries to starting quarterback Kenny Pickett and backup Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph took over as the starter for the remainder of the season. This has sparked discussions among fans about the Steelers’ need for a new quarterback.

Speculation has emerged linking the Steelers to an NFC South quarterback in the upcoming free agency. Pro Football Focus and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky suggest that Pittsburgh should consider pursuing Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield if he becomes available. Mayfield, who led Tampa Bay into the divisional round of the postseason against the Detroit Lions, has surpassed initial season expectations.

While it might be unlikely for the Buccaneers to part ways with Mayfield, the Steelers are deemed a suitable destination for him if the opportunity arises. The addition of Mayfield could address the quarterback issues that plagued Pittsburgh in the 2023 season, potentially providing the missing element for their offensive lineup.

Despite Mayfield’s past struggles to meet the expectations of a first overall NFL draft pick, he has recently demonstrated a high level of play, reminiscent of his playoff appearances with the Cleveland Browns in his second and third seasons. In the 2023 regular season with Tampa Bay, Mayfield achieved 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, marking his best statistical performance to date.

Although it is anticipated that Mayfield will stay with the Buccaneers in 2024, the prospect of him joining the Steelers, if available, is considered a logical move. Currently engaged in a playoff run with Tampa Bay, Mayfield aims to make a Super Bowl impact. The question remains whether he will continue with Tampa Bay in the following season or explore opportunities with another quarterback-needy franchise.
