Ragnar’s Return Shocks Fans: Travis Fimmel, Gustaf Skarsgård, and George Blagden Face Odin’s Wrath in Netflix’s ‘The Raven’s Oath’ This Fall

Netflix has once again rocked the entertainment world with the surprise announcement of its upcoming historical-fantasy series, The Raven’s Oath. The streaming giant has confirmed that this highly anticipated production will premiere in Fall 2025, and fans are already brimming with excitement — not only because of the fresh narrative that intertwines myth and legacy, but also due to the shocking return of a beloved character: Ragnar Lothbrok.

Yes, you read that right.

Travis Fimmel, the Australian actor who became a global icon for his portrayal of the legendary Viking warrior in Vikings, is officially reprising his role in an unexpected continuation of the Norse saga. Joined by fellow Vikings alumni Gustaf Skarsgård (Floki) and George Blagden (Athelstan), the trio will lead a new narrative that blends historical fiction, supernatural lore, and Norse mythology in The Raven’s Oath. And this time, the wrath of Odin looms larger than ever.

The Legend Reborn

In the official teaser released by Netflix, we see a darkened forest cloaked in mist, a raven soaring overhead as haunting chants echo in the background. Then — suddenly — a familiar silhouette emerges from the shadows: Ragnar Lothbrok, alive, older, and battle-worn. The scene ends with a cryptic message: “Vengeance does not die — it waits.”

The return of Ragnar has left fans speechless, especially since his death in Vikings Season 4 was not only monumental but seemed absolute. Travis Fimmel’s departure had left a void in the series’ latter seasons. But The Raven’s Oath appears set to redefine the boundaries of the story’s universe by exploring what lies beyond death itself.

According to early production notes, the series picks up years after Ragnar’s supposed demise, set in a darker alternate version of Valhalla and Midgard, where the gods themselves have grown weary of humanity’s rebellion and disloyalty. It’s here that Ragnar, Floki, and Athelstan find themselves once again — not to conquer new lands, but to reckon with the gods who once guided them.

Facing Odin’s Wrath

At the center of the series is the divine retribution orchestrated by Odin himself. Described as a brooding and merciless figure in this new adaptation, Odin (yet to be cast publicly) has grown displeased with the deeds of his mortal champions. Their defiance, their betrayals, and even their friendships are seen as threats to divine order.

Ragnar, Athelstan, and Floki are summoned into an eternal trial — a spiritual purgatory where they must atone for their past, confront their inner demons, and decide once and for all where their true loyalties lie. The trio, whose relationships in Vikings formed the emotional and ideological core of the original series, are once again thrown into conflict — but this time, the stakes are metaphysical.

According to showrunner and writer Eliza Norström, The Raven’s Oath is “less about conquest and more about consequence.”

> “This series doesn’t rewrite history,” Norström explained in an interview with Netflix Tudum. “It builds on it. We’re exploring what happens to the souls of legends — where does their journey take them once the saga ends? What happens when the gods they worship turn against them?”

A Reunion Long Awaited

The chemistry between Travis Fimmel, Gustaf Skarsgård, and George Blagden is already legendary. Their on-screen brotherhood, marred by betrayal and love in equal measure.
