Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell has defended head coach Dan Campbell amidst criticism for his decisions during the NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Speaking with ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, Sewell expressed disagreement with any negative feedback directed at Campbell, stating, “I don’t agree with any criticism towards Coach. I’ve got his back until the end.” He further emphasized his loyalty by saying, “If he tells me to jump off a cliff with him, I’m right next to him.” Sewell affirmed his seriousness in supporting Campbell, adding, “So, whatever he says, whatever he calls, we’ve just got to execute. So, that’s on us really. That’s my guy.”

During the game, the Lions held a 24-7 lead at halftime, but the 49ers mounted a comeback with 27 unanswered points in the second half. Detroit’s failure to convert on two fourth-down attempts deep in San Francisco territory contributed to the 49ers’ momentum. Although the Lions managed to score a touchdown in their final offensive possession, the 49ers recovered the onside kick, securing their victory.

Critics have pointed to Campbell’s aggressive coaching style, which has been a hallmark of his tenure with the Lions, as a factor in the team’s loss. However, this approach had previously led the Lions to the NFC Championship Game.

The Lions had successfully converted fourth-down attempts in their first two playoff games, resulting in touchdowns and victories against the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the NFC Championship Game, the failed attempts were attributed to lapses in execution, including a dropped pass and pressure on the quarterback.

Additionally, criticisms of Campbell’s decision-making overlook the historical performance of Lions kicker Michael Badgley on long-range field goal attempts, highlighting the complexities involved in evaluating coaching decisions.

Despite some questionable choices during the game, Campbell’s adeptness at handling fourth-down situations has been crucial to the Lions’ success, culminating in their first NFC Championship Game appearance in 32 years.
