Leyton Orient have completed the signing of Daiki Sato, a 23-year-old central midfielder from Japanese J2 League side Montedio Yamagata, in a move that has caught many supporters by surprise.
The deal, believed to be worth around £180,000, includes performance-related add-ons and is viewed as one of the club’s smartest pieces of business this summer. Sato has signed a three-year contract after impressing Orient’s scouting department with his energy, passing range, and work rate.
Manager Richie Wellens is said to have personally approved the transfer after receiving glowing reports from scouts who followed the midfielder throughout the 2025 season. Club insiders believe Sato has the technical ability and discipline to adapt quickly to English football.
Speaking after completing the move, Sato said:
“This is a dream opportunity for me. I’ve always wanted to test myself in Europe, and Leyton Orient showed great belief in me. I can’t wait to meet the fans and help the team achieve its goals.”
The midfielder is expected to join the squad immediately for pre-season and could make his unofficial debut in Orient’s next friendly.
While not a household name, the club believes Sato has the potential to become one of League One’s surprise performers this season.
