Tommy Conway detailed his injury comeback in an emotional interview
Tommy Conway has recalled the moment that the severity of his injury in the play-off semi-final hit him, in an emotional interview detailing his comeback.
Conway suffered a stress fracture in his ankle during the play-off semi-final second leg against Southampton last term.
The forward quickly saw a specialist who advised him that surgery was the only realistic prospect of recovery without risking longer-term damage. But to do so meant Conway would therefore miss the World Cup.
At that point, Boro hadn’t been reinstated for the play-offs, so Conway went under the knife unaware of what would be happening with Boro, amid the uncertainty caused by the EFL’s Spygate charges against Southampton.
It was the day he had his surgery that the EFL hearing took place, with Conway learning that Boro had been reinstated for the final. It gave the young striker something to look forward to, amid his World Cup heartbreak, with his team-mates 90 minutes away from making him a Premier League footballer.
Despite being unavailable for the game, Conway made sure to be around the team on the day of the final – offering his usual encouragement and friendly banter, which has made him one of the most popular members of the Boro dressing room.
