🚨 SUNDERLAND EYE BRIGHTON MIDFIELDER MATT O’RILEY IN LATE TRANSFER MOVE
Sunderland are reportedly keeping a close eye on Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Matt O’Riley as Régis Le Bris looks to add further quality and depth to his midfield before the summer transfer window closes.
With the transfer deadline rapidly approaching, Sunderland are understood to be assessing opportunities in the market, and O’Riley’s profile could make him an attractive option for the Black Cats as they prepare for a demanding season that includes Premier League and Europa League football.
O’Riley has established himself as one of Brighton’s technically gifted midfielders since arriving at the Amex. His ability to operate as a No.8 or further forward, combined with his passing range and goal threat, has made him an appealing player for clubs looking for creativity from midfield.
Sunderland’s interest would make sense from a squad-building perspective. Le Bris has already strengthened several areas of his team, but the club are facing a much heavier schedule this season. European football brings additional fixtures, and Sunderland need enough quality throughout the squad to compete domestically while also handling their Europa League commitments.
The Black Cats have already shown that they are prepared to invest heavily when they identify the right player. Their summer recruitment has focused on building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, rather than simply surviving in the Premier League.
O’Riley would represent a different type of signing.
The Denmark international is known for his composure on the ball, intelligent movement and ability to contribute around the opposition penalty area. Brighton, however, would not be expected to make negotiations easy.

Brighton have already experienced major midfield change this summer following Carlos Baleba’s move to Manchester United. The club officially confirmed Baleba’s departure on August 25 after three seasons and 112 appearances for Brighton.
That could make O’Riley an even more important player for Brighton as the new season develops.
The midfielder has also previously attracted interest from clubs at the top end of European football, meaning Sunderland could face a difficult battle if they decide to make a serious approach.
For Sunderland, though, the attraction is obvious.
The club have European ambitions, a growing financial platform and a squad that finished seventh in their first Premier League season back in the top flight. They are now looking to build on that achievement rather than allow it to become a one-season success.
Le Bris has already made it clear that squad depth is important with Sunderland facing the demands of European competition. The club’s recruitment has therefore continued into the final stages of the window.
A move for O’Riley would be another statement of intent.
It would also give Sunderland a midfielder capable of linking defence and attack, creating chances and contributing goals from deeper positions. His versatility could be particularly valuable during a season in which Sunderland will need to rotate players regularly.
The biggest question would be the price.
Brighton would have little reason to sell cheaply, particularly with the deadline approaching and limited time to find a replacement. Sunderland would therefore have to decide whether they are prepared to make a significant investment for a player they believe can immediately improve their midfield.
For supporters, the next few days could be fascinating.
Sunderland have already demonstrated that they are willing to move aggressively when opportunities arise, and with the transfer deadline now approaching, there is still plenty of time for another major deal to emerge.
Whether O’Riley becomes a genuine Sunderland target remains to be seen, but his profile fits the type of midfielder the Black Cats could use as they attempt to compete on multiple fronts.
One thing is certain: Sunderland are not behaving like a club satisfied simply with staying in the Premier League.
They want to compete.
