Mark Howard Reflects on Wrexham Journey and Eyes First-Choice Role

Veteran goalkeeper Mark Howard has announced his departure from Wrexham AFC, marking the end of a significant chapter in both his and the club’s history. Howard, 38, played a crucial role in the club’s remarkable journey from the National League to the Championship, becoming the only goalkeeper to contribute to all three consecutive promotions.

A Journey of Dedication and Resilience

Howard joined Wrexham in the summer of 2022, bringing with him a wealth of experience from previous stints at clubs like Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers, and Blackpool. In his debut season, he made 37 appearances, playing a pivotal role in Wrexham’s promotion from the National League. The following season, he added another 10 appearances as the club secured promotion to League One. Despite limited appearances in the recent season, Howard’s contributions were instrumental in Wrexham’s historic rise to the Championship.

Reflecting on his time at Wrexham, Howard expressed deep gratitude to the club’s Hollywood co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, as well as his teammates and fans. In a heartfelt social media post, he emphasized his desire to continue playing, stating that he is not yet retiring and still has more to offer the sport.

Embracing a Mentorship Role

Throughout his tenure at Wrexham, Howard embraced a mentorship role, guiding younger goalkeepers and contributing to the team’s development. Manager Phil Parkinson praised Howard’s influence, stating, “Mark’s a senior player and a great influence on the younger goalkeepers. He’s also still fit; he works hard in training and is a good role model for the young players, and a good character to have in the dressing room.

Howard’s professionalism and dedication were evident when he stepped up during an injury crisis, making his first league start in 12 months. He expressed readiness and commitment, highlighting the importance of being prepared to contribute whenever called upon.

Pursuing Academic and Media Endeavors

Beyond the pitch, Howard achieved academic success by earning a first-class degree in Professional Sports Writing and Broadcasting from Staffordshire University. He launched the “Yours, Mine, Away!” podcast, delving into the world of goalkeeping with current and former professionals. His endeavors in media and journalism showcase his commitment to personal growth and storytelling within the sport.

A Legacy at Wrexham

Howard’s departure marks the beginning of squad changes as Wrexham prepares for their debut season in the Championship. His contributions, both on and off the field, have left a lasting impact on the club. Co-owner Ryan Reynolds paid tribute to Howard, calling him the “beating heart” of the team and praising his leadership and professionalism.

As Howard looks ahead to the next chapter in his career, his journey at Wrexham stands as a testament to resilience, dedication, and the profound influence a player can have within a club.
